How to plan transport for a stay in Dhërmi
Most transport problems on the Riviera are planning problems. They are also easy to avoid if you think about the trip in four parts: getting here, moving around while you are here, day trips, and getting home.
First, understand the shape of Dhërmi
Dhërmi is not one place. The historic village sits high on the hillside, reached by a road off the SH8 and threaded with stone lanes and steps. Below it, a separate access road drops to the shore, where Dhërmi Beach, the beach clubs and most of the newer accommodation are. Drymades is the next bay along, and Palasë is over the rise to the north.
The difference in height between the village and the sea is the single most important fact for planning. It is a pleasant walk down and a demanding one back up, and in July and August it is hot by nine in the morning.
Where you choose to stay therefore shapes everything else. A room in the old village is quieter and more beautiful; a room near the beach is more convenient. Neither is wrong, but they imply different transport plans.
The four decisions
1. How you arrive
Almost certainly from Tirana airport. Decide early between a private transfer, public transport with changes, or a hire car — and book the transfer before July if you are travelling in high season.
2. How you move around daily
Between your accommodation, the beach and the village. If you are staying up in the old village without a car, assume you will want a lift at least once a day.
3. Day trips
Himarë, Jal, Gjipe, Qeparo, the Llogara viewpoint, perhaps Sarandë or Vlorë. These are the journeys worth booking rather than improvising.
4. The journey home
Usually the one people leave until last and should not. Early flights from Tirana mean pre-dawn departures, and those need arranging in advance.
Should you hire a car?
An honest answer from a taxi operator: sometimes, yes. If you are staying two weeks, want to explore inland, and are comfortable on mountain roads, a car gives you freedom that transfers do not.
For a week or less the calculation usually goes the other way. Parking near the Dhërmi and Drymades beaches is genuinely difficult in high season, the access roads are narrow, and a hire car sitting unused still costs money. Add an evening out and the car becomes a liability rather than an asset.
A common middle path is to hire a car for part of a longer stay and use transfers for the airport legs at both ends. That avoids driving the Llogara Pass tired, which is the part most visitors regret.
Things worth arranging before you arrive
- Airport transfer in, with your flight number
- Airport transfer out, especially for an early departure
- Whether your accommodation is reachable by vehicle, or where the nearest point is
- Child seats, if you need them, confirmed rather than assumed
- Any day trips with fixed timings, such as a ferry from Sarandë
The detail that catches people out
Accommodation in the old village and on the steeper slopes is often reached by stepped lanes that no vehicle can enter. Booking sites rarely mention this, and it is a genuinely unwelcome discovery at the end of a long travel day with suitcases.
Ask your host directly whether a car can reach the door, and tell us the property name when you book a transfer. We will identify the nearest accessible point in advance.
A sensible week in Dhërmi
Arrive by transfer, whatever time your flight lands. Spend the first couple of days locally — the beach, the village, dinner within walking distance — and get a feel for the slope before planning anything ambitious.
Use the middle of the week for the journeys that need a vehicle: Himarë and Jal, Gjipe if you are up for the walk, Qeparo's old village. Book those as transfers with agreed return times.
Keep the last day simple and arrange the departure transfer before you need it. Early flights from Tirana mean leaving the coast well before sunrise, and that is not something to organise the night before.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a car to stay in Dhërmi?
No, but you do need a plan. Without a car you will rely on transfers for the beach runs, day trips and the airport, and that works well if you arrange the fixed points in advance.
Is it better to stay in the village or by the beach?
The village is quieter and more attractive; the beach is more convenient and flatter. If you stay in the village without a car, budget for a lift most days.
When should I book my airport transfers?
As soon as you have your flight times, particularly for July and August and for early-morning departures.
